The generation of new and unique ideas to solve a given problem in a specific innovation area is one of the most important issues in the fuzzy front-end of innovation.
Innovation Gaming is a promising approach to overcome known barriers during such creative processes.
refQuest is a multi-player online game supporting the idea generation by disruptiveness and structuring of the ideation process through the application of creativity techniques. It allows virtual and distributed teams to be involved in ideation processes over distance.
refQuest is based on a generic game model. The core of the model is a business process defined for each organization in the game. The process model consists of a series of steps, which are executed in a predefined order including parallel execution. Each process step is of specific type: either a document needs to be filled out or a actions need to be taken. The players are organized in departments (or groups) mapped onto organisations in the game. A facilitator is monitoring the game progress and he can intervene by setting events. Each completion of a process step updates a set of indicators consisting of time, costs, and quality.
The content of the game is individual and can be defined by a game designer, It can be considered as a set of objects created by using gaming classes. This approach ensures the separation of algorithmic processing and game content which allows the change of the content without changing the game itself. The architecture of the simulation game consists of three layers: the underlying game model, a simulation engine and a user interface. This approach allows to apply refQuest to virtually any topic of an ideation process.
